A Left Turn for Democrats in New Hampshire?
  + stars: | 2023-11-22 | by ( Louis Jacobson | ) www.usnews.com   time to read: +8 min
Since their narrow victories in 2016, Democrats have won every federal race in New Hampshire – and have done so by widening margins. But Sununu, the scion of a New Hampshire Republican dynasty, decided not to run for a new term in 2024. Depending on vacancies and special elections, the Democrats might be able to flip control of the chamber even before the 2024 election. Under Biden, Democrats changed the order of their primaries to place New Hampshire tied for second, rather than first. Regardless, the unusual nature of the 2024 primary could have negative consequences for Democrats, Galdieri said.

Kari Lake on Tuesday launched her bid for the Republican Senate nomination in Arizona. But during her kickoff, Lake didn't focus on grievances and instead framed election integrity as a bipartisan issue. (The move likely dooms the prospects of Blake Masters, the unsuccessful 2022 Senate nominee who The Wall Street Journal previously reported had been set to jump into the 2024 Senate race.) In last year's gubernatorial election, Lake earned 49.6% of the vote, losing by about 17,000 votes out of nearly 2.6 million ballots cast.

Even though I made a mistake when I took out my student loans, people should know it's more nuanced than that. I stupidly assumed I would make enough after graduation to pay off my student loans quickly. It's no secret that state schools get a bad rap and are often looked down on. I had one guidance counselor who told me someone with my grades should aim higher than a state school. I'm now paying for the mistakes and will struggle to pay back my student loans for the next decade.

Because of the pause on student-loan repayments, I saved a lot of money for a down payment. Every time I purchased an item I needed, I wondered whether I should save that money for my payments. Since I focused on saving and had the extra money without my loan repayments, I've been able to get close. Why didn't I save money specifically for my loans during the pause? I don't have any answers yet, but the scary reality is I'm going to have to put my dreams on hold.

Karl Rove called out Vivek Ramaswamy over what he said was a "robotic" GOP debate performance. "Chris Christie got off one of the better lines of the night that he sounded like ChatGPT," he said. While Rove said Ramaswamy "on points had a good evening," he also said that the candidate "had a bad evening" when it came to substance. Ron DeSantis of Florida, who has so far been unable to dethrone former President Donald Trump from the top of the GOP presidential perch, had "a good night" at the debate. This was important for him to have a good night."

Ron DeSantis' presidential campaign sat in second in GOP primary polls behind former President Donald Trump. A new Emerson College poll shows Christie in second place, ahead of DeSantis. Former President Donald Trump was far and away the most desired GOP candidate to the polled likely New Hampshire Republican primary voters, as 49% of them said they plan to support him. In March, the Emerson College survey found that 17% of likely New Hampshire Republican primary voters said they would support DeSantis for the GOP nomination. Trump has repeatedly hinted that he may skip out on the event, leaving ample opportunity for DeSantis to sway any unsure voters.

For months, Democrats have worried about a three-way Senate race in Arizona giving the GOP a boost. But a new Emerson College poll shows Democrats ahead in three-way matchups that include Sinema. But in a three-way race with Gallego, Lamb, and Sinema, the Democratic candidate leads with 36% support, followed by Lamb at 29% and Sinema with 21% support — while 15% of respondents were undecided. And in a three-way contest with Gallego, Wright, and Sinema, the congressman leads with 37% support, with Sinema at 26% and Wright with 25% support. One of the more fascinating elements of the polling is Sinema's continued popularity with a sizable bloc of Republicans, a dynamic similar to her 2018 Senate victory when she ran as a Democrat.

Before Covid, Gabe Whitney, a 41-year-old from West Bath, Maine, didn’t think much about vaccines. He began following anti-vax figures like Del Bigtree, Robert Malone and, of course, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., whom Whitney already admired for his environmental work. Kennedy has long touted an illusory connection between vaccines and autism, and has repeatedly said that pandemic restrictions arose from a C.I.A. plan to “clamp down totalitarian control.” If Kennedy was so wrong, Whitney thought, it didn’t make sense that his critics wouldn’t debate him. (I requested an interview with Kennedy, but never heard back from the person I was told could schedule it.)

Donald Trump accused Kayleigh McEnany of citing the "wrong" poll numbers on Fox News. McEnany was an ardent Trump loyalist, and served as White House press secretary for much of 2020. In a post on Truth Social page, Trump accused McEnany of citing the "wrong" poll numbers on Fox News and suggested that she was a "RINO," or "Republican in name only." "Kayleigh 'Milktoast' McEnany just gave out the wrong poll numbers on FoxNews," Trump wrote. An Emerson College poll released last Thursday said Trump had a 42 point lead over his rivals in Iowa.

The state became the 22nd to legalize recreational marijuana and follows Missouri and Maryland, which did so earlier this year. Some states are even moving ahead with proposals or ballot measures to legalize weed, putting them within arms' reach of having recreational markets. These are the states that have a chance to legalize adult-use marijuana in the coming years. OhioOhio may vote on whether to legalize recreational marijuana in November. Haren said the proposal also plans to build upon Ohio's medical marijuana program and issue additional adult use licenses to new companies.

Citing a recent Emerson College poll, Mr. Trump noted that 62 percent of G.O.P. “He’s crashing and burning,” Mr. Trump said of Mr. DeSantis, suggesting that he had benefited in the past from his association with Mr. Trump but that he was now struggling to get a foothold on his own. Mr. Trump has never shied away from broadsides against other Republicans, something Ronald Reagan famously frowned upon in what became known as the 11th Commandment. And in New Hampshire, Reagan’s presidential library was a target for Mr. Trump, who questioned its selection as the venue for the second G.O.P. He pointed out that Frederick J. Ryan Jr., the publisher and chief executive of The Washington Post, another frequent Trump target, was chairman of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation & Institute.
CHICAGO, April 4 (Reuters) - Crime is the central issue in Tuesday's mayoral runoff in Chicago, where voters are choosing between two candidates with contrasting approaches to public safety. Former Chicago Public Schools CEO Paul Vallas calls for more cops; Cook County Commissioner Brandon Johnson calls for more mental health support and opportunities for young people. Johnson, a former Chicago teacher and union organizer, says he will promote 200 new detectives from the existing pool of police officers. A poll last week by Emerson College Polling, WGN-TV and The Hill showed Vallas leading Johnson by 5 points, with 13% undecided. LACONIA, New Hampshire, March 24 (Reuters) - Longtime Donald Trump supporter Doug Lambert agrees with the former president that the potential criminal charges he faces in New York are being cooked up by his enemies on the left. But, Lambert worries about the "messiness" of a Trump presidential candidacy and is leaning towards voting for someone else. In a University of New Hampshire poll in January, likely Republican voters preferred DeSantis over Trump by a 12-point margin, 42% to 30%, with Sununu at 4%. "The more indictments, the more points of leverage a DeSantis or whoever can use to make the case against Trump." "Donald Trump right now is a distraction for the Republican Party in trying to go forward. Yet the willingness of Republican party members to criticize Trump in conversations with Reuters is striking. She worked on his New Hampshire primary campaign, knocked on doors for him, urged anybody she met to vote for him. Despite signs of weariness with Trump, he will still be a formidable candidate in the New Hampshire primary, some party strategists said. His influence is still fairly significant," said Jim Merrill, a veteran New Hampshire Republican strategist.
[1/2] Republican U.S. Senate candidate and former football player Herschel Walker speaks during an event ahead of the runoff election against Senator Raphael Warnock in Warner Robins, Georgia, U.S., December 2, 2022. Democrats secured effective control of the Senate in the Nov. 8 general election, while Republicans won the U.S. House of Representatives. The early vote is expected to have leaned Democratic, political experts from both parties say, meaning the Walker campaign goes into Tuesday with a sizeable deficit. It is not an insurmountable lead, Hicks said, noting that while Warnock edged past Walker in the Nov. 8 election by 49.44% to 48.49%, Walker won Election Day by some 220,000 votes. ADVANTAGE WARNOCKThe Senate runoff is the second in Georgia in two years.
Warnock has a 50%-46% lead over Walker in the Georgia Senate runoff, per a new SurveyUSA poll. Independents, a critical slice of the Georgia electorate, backed Warnock over Walker by 13 points. In the poll, Warnock enjoyed near-unanimous support (95%) among Democrats, while Walker earned the backing of 87% of Republicans; 11% of GOP respondents crossed party lines to support Warnock over Walker in the survey. Because no candidate received 50% of the vote at the time, a runoff election was triggered. A recent Emerson College Polling survey showed Warnock leading Walker 49%-47% among likely voters, while a new CNN poll had Warnock ahead of Walker 52%-48%, also among likely voters.
Ron DeSantis by a wide margin in a hypothetical 2024 Republican presidential primary, according to a new poll. Trump received 55% of Republican registered voters' support, while DeSantis, his potential rival for the White House nomination, received just 25%, the Emerson College poll found. And in a potential rematch of the 2020 election in 2024, Biden would defeat Trump by a margin of 45% to 41%, the survey found. Voters with a high school degree or less support Trump by 71%. Republican voters with a postgraduate degree support Trump the least, at 32%.

A recreational marijuana smoker indulges in smoking weed on April 14, 2020 in the Bushwick section of the Brooklyn borough of New York City. Arkansas, Maryland, Missouri, North Dakota and South Dakota could join 19 other states and the District of Columbia, which have already legalized recreational marijuana. Having the ability to watch back a video with a voice that more closely aligns with their gender identity has been emotional, trans TikTok users told NBC News. “It’s not something I ever imagined I’d get to experience.”Some videos celebrating the voice feature have racked up millions of views. It’s unclear when the voice filter was added to the app. The benefit of having such a TikTok filter, Rose said, is that it can hopefully alleviate the gender dysphoria that some trans creators may feel. She said she hopes that TikTok might allow users to customize things such as pitch, tone and timbre of the voice filters in the future.

Opinion | Frustrated With Polling? Pollsters Are, Too
  + stars: | 2022-10-24 | by ( Quoctrung Bui | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +18 min
But what’s really troubling pollsters going into this election is that it’s unclear how much more error these problems will add during this cycle. Just because you put the right ingredients in a bowl, doesn’t mean you’re going to end up with a cake. I think a lot of that has been swept under the rug because the move to online polling seems so inexorable. Pollsters don’t know what people are seeing, hearing and reading. I know at FiveThirtyEight you can search by A-rated or B-rated, but I don’t know how they’re coming up with these ratings.
